Prophylaxis for pregnant women

Die Zahnbehandlung in der SchwangerschaftDuring pregnancy it is rather important to look after your oral health, because of the hormonal exception it can come to inflammatory periodontium changes.

The still existing belief “With every pregnancy a women loses a tooth” is when put in prospect with the current oral hygiene measures not valid anymore. If you plan to get pregnant, an appointment at the dentist cannot be missed.

What is desirable is a cavity free and a non-need to redevelop the natural dentition during and after the pregnancy. The mother is unfortunately a transmitter of bacteria for her newborn. Please let us consult you about prophylactic measures during your pregnancy.

Your habitually teeth cleaning should be definitely continued. The dentist will of course take the right placement procedures with a more advanced pregnancy. Although, if a treatment is still necessary, there is enough experience in non-hurtful treatment forms.

We are always open for questions if help is needed!

How does cavity emerge?

The disease of cavity is an utterly complex process. Especially the consumption of sugary nutrition and beverages has normally the perfect functioning, natural balance of the “biotope” oral cavity, changed.

There are billions of microorganisms, bacteria and bacilli living there. Some usually harmless microorganisms even develop a dangerous activity if sweets, meals or beverages are being processed with hidden sugar.
They breed with lightning speed, build a tenacious sticky mass, and which leads to tartar (plaque) on the teeth.
They also produce during their metabolism an aggressive acid. From that acid, the first attack will be on the hardest substance of the body, the dental enamel and afterwards the dentinal will be destroyed.

The saliva test will show your individual risk of cavity

Even before any teeth damages have occurred, the risk of cavity, which is different for every human being, can be determined by the saliva diagnostic.

Karies-Prophylaxe - Analyse

Similarly to the blood analysis in which the doctor evaluates your blood sugar or your level of fat, and also builds his therapy relying on these values; the modern science did also develop a diagnostic process for dental medicine: the saliva test. With its help, the individual cavity risk can be detected and controlled.
The amount of the cavity causing microorganisms-streptococcus mutans and lactobacilli can be determined through the bacteriological analysis per millimetre.

The saliva pH value

The acidity level will be determined by the pH-value. Scientists have the middle or “natural” value of the saliva with 6.4.
The value changes constantly and is influenced by alimentation and the activity of the dental plaque.
If the acidity level will decrease underneath 5.6 as for example when eating candy, there will be a saliva acidity increase. With the increase of acidity, the risk of getting cavity is much higher, because the natural cushion saliva effect is reduced.

Precise analysis need time

The amount of saliva needed will be taken out of your mouth with a specially developed test strip and brought on a hotbed. The bacteria (lactobacilli and streptococcus) will breed for two days in an incubator.

After proceeding with the micro bacteria analysis, the concentration of the bacteria in the saliva will be established and compared with a grid per millimetre of saliva.
The lactobacilli gives you a clue about the nutritional behaviour and the consumption about fermented carbohydrates (f. e.g. sugar). Whereas the amount of streptococcus mantus determines the individual risk of cavity.

Preventing cavity will be more successful

The results of the saliva test gives you an individual, targeted and therefore an effective reduction of your personal cavity risk.
To attain that goal, several consultations and professional, preventive dental measures have to be taken into account and are necessary for

  • Nutrition
  • Oral hygiene
  • Amelodentinal hardening through fluoride
  • Cavity prevention through fissures – sealing
